Feature Creep

Definition

Feature Creep refers to the gradual expansion of a product’s features, often beyond the initial scope, which can lead to increased complexity and a diminished user experience. While new features may seem beneficial, feature creep can overwhelm users, slow down development, and complicate the interface. Effective product management involves balancing feature expansion with maintaining usability.

Why it matters

Feature creep is the product death by a thousand additions — each new feature seems justified in isolation, but collectively they make the product harder to learn, slower to load, and more expensive to maintain. For SaaS founders, the discipline to say no to features (including ones your best customers request) is one of the hardest and most important skills. Products that try to do everything for everyone usually end up doing nothing especially well.

Real-world example

Basecamp explicitly publishes their policy against feature requests — they've removed features from the product when they believed simpler was better. Their restraint is a deliberate competitive positioning against feature-bloated competitors like Microsoft Project.
