Definition

Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a design methodology that prioritizes the experiences, needs, and limitations of users throughout the design process. HCD involves deep user engagement through interviews, usability testing, and participatory design workshops. By emphasizing empathy and inclusivity, HCD ensures products are functional, accessible, and emotionally satisfying. It extends beyond interfaces to encompass systems, services, and environments, addressing cultural, physical, and social contexts.

Why it matters

Human-centered design is the philosophy behind why the best products feel like they were made 'for me' rather than for some generic user. It means making design decisions based on real user research rather than internal assumptions, and iterating based on user feedback rather than opinion. For founders, HCD is a competitive advantage — most products are built by people who are not their users, making genuine user empathy rare and valuable.

IDEO's redesign of the hospital patient experience at Kaiser Permanente put patients at the center of every decision — including redesigning waiting rooms, staff communication protocols, and room layouts based on ethnographic research with real patients.
