Information Scent

Definition

Information Scent refers to the cues or signals that help users determine whether they are on the right path to find the information or achieve the goal they are seeking. Strong information scent guides users intuitively, while weak scent can lead to confusion and frustration. In web design, clear navigation, meaningful links, and well-structured content can help improve information scent and enhance user engagement.

Why it matters

Information scent explains why users sometimes navigate confidently through unfamiliar websites and sometimes feel completely lost — it comes down to whether the navigation labels and visual cues consistently signal that they're getting closer to what they want. Weak information scent leads to pogo-sticking (clicking into a section, immediately going back, trying another). For content-heavy products, investing in clear, descriptive navigation labels often delivers bigger engagement improvements than visual redesigns.

Real-world example

Amazon's breadcrumbs, category hierarchy, and 'Customers also viewed' sections all provide strong information scent — at every step users can see where they are and where to go next to find what they want. This systematic scent is a major reason Amazon's vast catalog feels navigable despite its complexity.
