Visual Weight
Visual Weight refers to the perceived importance or dominance of an element within a design. Elements with greater visual weight draw more attention and are typically larger, darker, or more colorful. Designers use visual weight to establish a hierarchy, guiding users’ attention toward key areas of the interface, such as calls to action or primary content, while deemphasizing less important elements.
Visual weight is the tool designers use to guide attention without words — making the most important element on a screen obviously the most important through size, contrast, and color. In SaaS interfaces, this matters most on dashboards and settings pages where users need to quickly orient to what requires their attention. When everything has equal visual weight, users spend cognitive energy figuring out where to look rather than doing the actual task.
Stripe's dashboard uses visual weight masterfully — the primary revenue number is displayed in large, prominent type while secondary metrics are smaller, and action buttons are high-contrast against a neutral background. This hierarchy means users can extract the most important information at a glance without reading everything on screen.
