Call-to-Action (CTA)

Definition

A Call-to-Action (CTA) is a button or prompt that encourages users to take a specific action, such as “Sign Up,” “Buy Now,” or “Learn More.” CTAs are strategically placed within interfaces to direct users to the most important actions, guiding them toward business goals. Effective CTAs use compelling language, prominent placement, and contrasting colors to increase conversion rates.

Why it matters

Your CTA is the single most conversion-critical element on any page. The difference between 'Submit' and 'Start your free trial' is often a 20-40% difference in conversion rate — the copy, color, size, and placement all compound. For early-stage startups, optimizing your primary CTA is one of the highest-leverage design changes you can make before spending more on ads.

Real-world example

Apollo's hero section leads with a bold headline and a single 'Sign up for free' CTA button in high-contrast yellow — positioned directly below the value proposition with no competing links to dilute conversion.
