Definition

Also known as negative space, is the unused or empty space around and between design elements. White space enhances readability, reduces visual clutter, and helps guide user attention to important content. Proper use of white space improves overall design aesthetics and contributes to a more pleasant and user-friendly experience.

Why it matters

White space is the counterintuitive design principle that adding less can communicate more — generous spacing makes content feel important, increases reading comprehension, and reduces the visual overwhelm that causes users to abandon information-dense pages. For SaaS products, the temptation to fill every pixel with features or metrics creates dashboards that users scroll past without absorbing. Reducing information density, not increasing it, is often what makes complex data more actionable.

Real-world example

ChatGPT's new conversation screen shows nothing but centered text ('Nice to meet you. Here's a quick tour...') on a white canvas — the generous surrounding white space makes the single message feel calm and intentional rather than sparse.
