Parallax effect

Definition

The Parallax Effect is a visual technique where background elements move at a different speed than foreground elements as the user scrolls, creating a sense of depth and immersion. It is commonly used in web design to create dynamic, engaging experiences. While visually appealing, the parallax effect should be used carefully to avoid performance issues or creating disorientation for users.

Why it matters

Parallax effects can create memorable, immersive scrolling experiences on marketing sites — but they come with real costs: performance overhead on mobile, accessibility issues for users with vestibular disorders (motion sensitivity), and a dated aesthetic when overused. For landing pages targeting enterprise buyers or technically sophisticated audiences, heavy parallax animations can actually signal 'style over substance.' Use it for one or two hero moments, not as a global scroll experience.

Real-world example

Apple's product pages use subtle parallax to add depth to product shots — the device appears to drift slightly as you scroll past it, creating a three-dimensional effect that showcases the hardware. This restrained use adds elegance without the motion sickness risk of full-page parallax scrolling.
